Jennifer Ann Zucco Scholarship Fund

This scholarship fund was conceived and created by a dear friend of Jennifer and her family, Beth Shepherd Peters. To initiate this special scholarship fund and have it accepted by New Canaan High School, Beth composed the following letter:

Jennifer Ann Zucco attended the New Canaan public schools from kindergarten through graduation from New Canaan High School in 1968. Our friendship began on my first day at NCHS, first period study hall: I was a sophomore transfer student and she was a freshman. We immediately clicked and our conversation never seemed to end.

From an early age, it was apparent that her artistic talent was special. Along with her talent came a brilliant mind. Jennifer left NCHS for Syracuse University but, after her freshman year, she became creatively frustrated. This started what would become her educational journey. Her talent often set her apart from her teachers causing great frustration. Her passion was to learn all there was to learn about all facets of art. She gleaned gems from Moore College of Art, Silvermine College of Art and graduated with a degree in Fine Art from Manhattanville College. The learning process never ended for Jennifer and private seminars continued to inspire her creative growth even as she mastered drawing, pastels and oils.

When I heard of Jennifer’s serious illness the first thought I had was to set up a scholarship fund so she would not be forgotten in New Canaan. I never spoke to her about this because I knew that in her heart she felt she was going to live, and yet I believe she would be honored. We have decided on the amount of $1,000.00 per year. Below is a list to keep in mind when making the choice:

– This is not a need-based scholarship-it is talent based.

– The student should have a strong desire to learn.

– It is our hope that this money will further the student’s art education.

– Passion

– A portfolio of at least 4 pieces should be submitted to the committee.

– It is our hope that the committee will be comprised of:

1. the art faculty

2. Janet Zucco Karabin (Jennifer’s sister) NCHS ’74

3. Beth Shepherd Peters NCHS ’67

I look forward to making this an honor among the students, with the hope that creative curiosity can find many answers.

I look forward to being part of this process,

Beth Shepherd Peters

It is through the love and commitment of friends like Beth and Jennifer’s family members that the Jennifer Ann Zucco Scholarship Fund will continue to provide an enduring and empowering legacy of opportunity for talented artistic minds and hearts. Scholarships have been awarded since the fund’s inception in 2007.
